Health Awareness Week

The aim of this week is to equip the students with the knowledge they need to make informed and healthy choices

The annual RSB Health Awareness Week is just around the corner. The aim of this week is to equip the students with the knowledge they need to make informed and healthy choices when it comes to nutrition, exercise and personal health issues.

Over the past few years the weeks themes have ranged from obesity and diabetes to junk food and the benefits of exercise. This year one of the key theme will be smoking, its affect on both the individual and the wider community. Smoking is a dangerous and addictive habit that is common among teenagers all over the world. The students will be exposed to a number of presentations across the curriculum outlining the statistics, the emotional and physical costs of smoking, as well as be given the opportunity to discuss personal experiences with their peers.

Another topic the students will be focusing on is ‘where does our food come from?’. In the last 50 years the way food is produce has changed dramatically and it has had a huge impact on public health and well-being. Some of the issues discussed will be, farming methods, genetically modified organism’s (GMO’s), and health related consequences.

This year we will also have a number of outside speakers visiting the school to discuss health topics. We have two doctors who will be giving presentations on the affects of smoking and the dangers of obesity. We also have a nutritionist doing a presentation of the benefits and dangers of the food we eat.

Knowledge is power and we aim to provide a balanced and thought provoking environment for the young men at RSB to immerse themselves in with the aim of not only enhance their own well-being, but also sharing this knowledge and education with their family, friends and wider community.
