Primary Key Stage 1

A happier and more motivated group of students would be hard to find!

During these formative years, students learn the Golden Rules and begin to understand the personal and social rewards of practising them at home and at school!

Our students are rewarded by their teachers during the regular school day,. Special recognition is however given to students at our weekly KS1 Assembly. Many mums choose to accompany their son's to school each Thursday and then remain for this assembly. Stickers, certificates and team points are announced and presented to students for extraordinary effort and achievement in both English and Arabic/ Islamic lessons. A library star is also presented to classes in which all students have remembered to bring their library bags on the right day!

Year 1 and Year 2 students attend school from 7:30am – 2:15pm each day. Happily, an increasing number of our young students now choose to remain to participate in a range of After School Activities each day. Rugby, football and karate remain firm favourites!

Curriculum

The National Curriculum guides planning in both Core and Foundation subjects. The timetable features ICT, Sound Technology, PE and Swimming. All of these specialist lessons are conducted in English.

Our students in these classes begin to formally read and write in both English and Arabic. All lessons are one hour long. The early steps to becoming bi-lingual speakers, necessitates well planned and highly differentiated daily lessons. A class teacher and a teaching assistant work with each class in English for most of the day. An Arabic/Islamic studies teacher takes at least one lesson each day in each class.

Read Write Inc lessons are also a  popular feature of most days. Students work in small homogenous groups to learn English letters and sounds, reading and writing.

Our KS 1 students participate in our Thursday Afternoon Activity Programme. Four activity blocks occur within each academic year. Six activities are selected each block and students rotate to a different activity each week for six weeks. From cooking to yoga, from camping to crafts – Thursdays are hectic but great fun!
