Welcome to Year 6

In Year 6 the boys are supported in class by their class teacher and class teaching assistant. Throughout the year they are encouraged to become more responsible and independent learners to prepare for the transition to secondary school.

Year Six are responsible for many activities during the year. Team Captains are appointed and they have many responsibilities around the school. The Year 6 students are heavily involved in Friendship Games. Year 6 students are expected to be positive examples to all the younger students.

Homework

In Year 6 the boys have a Homework Folder that contains their homework, reading book, timetable, a communication sheet and any letters to parents. Class teachers and parents can communicate through this folder in English or in Arabic.

Homework is given to encourage the boys to operate independently and to help reinforce and practice work that has been carried out in class. The boys are expected to read every night as part of their homework.  Boys should remember their homework folders and reading books daily.

* Homework and revision may be given on a memory stick so the boys need to ensure that they have one with them every day.

Information will be sent home throughout the year regarding after school activities. These include Karate, Swimming, Football, Rugby, and Basketball.  Please keep any information regarding dates and times of activities in the Homework Folder for future reference.

English

The boys get a reader from our reading scheme to take home on a daily basis as well as a school library book once a week. There are books in the secondary school library for those boys who have finished the reading scheme in primary.  In Year 6 we expect the boys to read independently every night.  In addition, we encourage parents to regularly listen to their children read aloud and ask questions about the book to enhance their reading fluency and comprehension skills. Reading practice is vital as it will help to enable the boys to understand and access the secondary curriculum. Boys in Year 6 should be reading for a minimum of ten minutes every day.

Maths

In Year 6 Maths is about developing and building upon the mathematics skills they have and then using and applying the methods they have been taught to further their ability in all areas of the maths curriculum.

There are five blocks of work that are covered, these are:

  • Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating
  • Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape
  • Block C: Handling data and measures
  • Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
  • Block E: Securing number facts, calculating, identifying relationships.

Mental maths is extremely important and we ask that boys practice their times tables at home on a regular basis to aid with instant recall.
