Primary Science Curriculum

The Science Curriculum at RSB Primary is based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales.

Science at RSB Primary is taught by the class teachers in weekly, 1 hour lessons. During an academic year, each student will study 3 different Science topics.  Emphasis is placed on teaching the students to develop investigative skills and an enquiring mind.

The school is fortunate to have a good bank of science resources as well as having access to science equipment in the secondary school if needed.

Foundation Stage

In Foundation Stage the boys are beginning to learn about themselves and their environment.  Through studying topics (such as  My Body and Wild Animals) and going on excursions outside of school, the boys are exposed to a wide variety of information and experiences to develop their vocabulary and knowledge of the world around them.

Key Stage 1 (KS1)

In KS1 we believe that science for young children is an introduction to the exploration of phenomena in order to gain knowledge, skills and understanding about the world in which they live. Children are taught how to learn from science in a logical and creative manner using investigative skills as opposed to merely learning a collection of scientific facts. As children  progress through the key stage they are introduced to an ever-widening vocabulary of relevant scientific terminology and they learn to record their work in an appropriate manner.

Key Stage 2 (KS2)

As the boys progress through Key Stage 2 they revisit earlier science topics, but begin to study them in greater depth. Boys are also required to become more independent and increasingly suggest their own theories and subsequent methods of enquiry. Students record data in a growing variety of ways, written, charts, pictorial which is then analysed against initial predictions.

In year 6 students work in the secondary school, making use of the science laboratories and more precise science equipment.
